Carrie Fisher looks like Margot Kidder

What has happened to Carrie Fisher? I guess we’re all getting older but it was surprising to see an unrecognizable former Princess Leia talking with Matt Lauer on The Today Show about her current book Wishful Thinking. Seriously, she looks like Margot Kidder, who battled her own problems including alcoholism and Attention-Starved Star Disorder.

Carrie was the daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. In the interview she compares her parents to Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston after Matt Lauer compares them to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. She notes that after seeing the pain of her parents having to deal with their fading celebritydom that she wanted nothing to do with that sort of lifestyle…And then of course she took the role of Princess Leia at age 19, a role that she never expected to catapult her into worldwide fame and cement her status as a pop culture icon.

Her personal life was rocky but apparently she’s kept a sense of humor about it all. When talking about her divorce from Brian Lourd she had to laugh that she was left for another man. Carrie related how when she told her mom Debbie about Brian’s new found sexual orientation that Debbie congratulated her on adding a homosexual to the line up of men in the family (even as this man was leaving).

What everyone was left remembering from the interview though was Carrie’s drug experimentation and who her mother got to counsel her. Of all people it was Cary Grant. It seems he tried LSD under the counsel of a doctor and therefore had knowledge of the drug lifestyle. So Carrie received a call from Mr. Grant and he told her not “to do acid.”

But Carried continued to “eat acid” (her words) and didn’t listen to her drug counselor, star of North By Northwest and Gunga Din. Her father then ran into Cary Grant at Grace Kelly’s funeral and the conversation about Carrie’s drug habits came up again. So Carrie received a second call from Cary Grant to stop taking acid. What a surreal situation for a young person. Most young people see their school guidance counselor or end up talking to the police when it comes to drugs.

The rest of the interview dealt with Carrie Fisher’s manic depressive disorder, probably caused by fame and drugs, and her various ways of coping with it. It wasn’t too hard to believe that the star could be bipolar and show a different mood or personality than normal–because again, she looked like Margot Kidder!
