Big Man Japan Monsters

According to the description, Big Man Japan is similar to the premise of Hancock. He’s a huge Asian guy who battles monsters and saves Tokyo from the likes of this eyeball creature above–and yet he annoys the citizens with his destructive habits.

You can see a crisp widescreen trailer at Apple. This Japanese import looks like a lot of fun because as usual the Japanese know how to create the twisted sort of monsters we like to see.

And we also get to see the cynicism of the times: Dai Sato comes from a long line of heroic heavyweights, yet while his ancestors were once championed with parades for their noble efforts, public interest in giant invaders has waned and Dai Sato has become something of a joke to the citizens of Tokyo. It kind of makes you think we’ve seen so many superheroes put on the big screen that maybe we’re getting tired of them too. And it’s no fault of our own, that’s just the way self-involved mortals are. We can be very hard to get along with for heroes who have a thankless job.

If any country needs a hero at this time, it’s Japan. Their recession is worse than ours by all accounts. The rows of tents offering shelter for the unemployed present a shocking reality to a country where lifetime employment was the rule just a decade ago. From CNN.com

The main character Dai Soto becomes the giant hero by going to the power plant and getting a bolt of electricity. I feel like there’s similarities to Godzilla here. An atomic bomb spawns a prehistoric dinosaur mix and a worldwide recession spawns a large, rather fat Japanese man.

Both Godzilla and Dai Soto are misunderstood, I’m sure. It’s not easy being big. You step on one building and it’s a lawsuit.
